At Stuyvesant High School, where he captained the math team, he graduated in 1974 as valedictorian and earned a silver medal for the United States in the International Mathematical Olympiad. He was awarded the Westinghouse Science Talent Search for a paper he produced on quasiperfect numbers when he was just 17 years old.

• Lander has studied non-coding RNAs, human population history, genome evolution, and genetic variation in humans throughout his career.
