About (Profile/Biography):
James VI and I was James VI of Scotland from 24 July 1567 to his death in 1625 as well as James I of Ireland and England from the acquisition of the Scottish and English thrones on 24 March 1603 to that date. Despite being ruled by James in a personal union, Scotland and England were separate sovereign nations with their own legislatures, courts, and laws.
James VI and I Family Tree:
As the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England and King of Ireland, James was a candidate to succeed his grandfather on all three thrones.
James VI and I History:
He succeeded Elizabeth I, the final Tudor empress of England and Ireland, who passed away childless, in 1603. The 22-year period from his death in 1625, known as the Jacobean Period, during which he continued to rule over all three countries, is known as his kingdom. After the Union of the Crowns, he established himself in England (the biggest of the three realms) in 1603 and only made one trip back to Scotland, in 1617. Throughout his reign, he referred to himself as the "King of Great Britain and Ireland."
James VI and I Accomplishments:
The majority of his goals were accomplished in Scotland, but he had significant challenges in England, notably the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and ongoing disputes with the English Parliament.
James VI and I Facts and Cause of Death:
He was a strong supporter of an English and Scottish joint parliament. The Partition of Ulster and English colonisation got underway during his rule.
On March 27, he passed away at Theobalds House in Hertfordshire after a severe case of dysentery, with Buckingham by his bedside.
James VI and I Successor:
He made an effort but was unable to stop the emergence of pro-war hawks in the English Parliament. Charles I, his second son, took over as his successor.
