The American politician William McKinley was born in Ohio and served in Congress between 1876 and 1890. McKinley fought for protective tariffs and served in Congress for seven terms between 1877 and 1891. During his tenure as governor, McKinley sought to control-and, perhaps, to lessen-management-labor discord. He strengthened the presidency by exercising his authority as commander-in-chief.
