Charles I was the monarch of England, Scotland, and Ireland from March 27, 1625, and his death in 1649. After his father's ascension to the English throne in 1603, the second son of King James VI of Scotland and a member of the House of Stuart immigrated to England and lived there for the most of the rest of his life.

He was recognised as the sole heir to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland upon the death of his older brother, Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1612. An eight-month tour to Spain in 1623 that highlighted the failure of the marriage negotiation was the culmination of a failed and unpopular endeavor to marry him to the Spanish Habsburg princess Maria Anna. Two years later, he married Henrietta Maria of the Bourbons, a French princess.
