Bipin Rawat, a well-known Indian military officer, was born in India. His family had a great history of government service with the Indian Army. His father served in the Indian Army as Lieutenant-General Laxman Singh Rawat. His mother was from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand and was the offspring of an ex-MLA. Bipin went to the St. Edward's School in Shimla and Cambrian Hall School in Dehradun for his formal education before enrolling in the National Defense Academy. The Chief of the Army Staff has now been held by three officers from the Gorkha Brigade.
Career:
In December 1978, Rawat received his appointment into the Indian Army and joined his father's fifth battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles.
Throughout his 43 years of military service, Rawat held the positions of Commanding Officer, GOC-C), Southern Command, General Staff Officer Grade 2, Colonel Military Secretary, as well as Senior Instructor in the Junior Command Wing.
The fourth commander from the Gorkha Brigade to hold the position of COAS, Rawat first served as Vice-Chief of Army Staff.
In 2016, the Indian Army crossed the Line of Control into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as part of the surgical strikes that were planned.It was said that Rawat was keeping an eye on the proceedings from South Block in New Delhi.
Achievements and Awards:
In the 2022 Republic Day honors list, Rawat received the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.
For his service, General Rawat received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal.
