Lloyd James Austin III was born in Mobile, Alabama, on August 8, 1953. His inauguration as the 28th Secretary of Defense occurred on January 22, 2021. He serves on the National Security Council as the President's principal assistant for all Defense-related matters. After completing his graduation from the United States Military Academy, he was commissioned as an infantry officer. Auburn University awarded him a Master of Arts degree in counselor education, and Webster University awarded him a Master of Business Management degree.
Career:
• After graduating from West Point, Austin was commissioned as a second lieutenant. As an initial assignment, he served with the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) in Germany.
• 1981: Lloyd James Austin III’s first assignment was as the district recruiting officer for the Army Indianapolis District Recruiting Command in Indianapolis, Indiana.
• 1993: The 505th Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division was under Austin's command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
• From September 2005 to October 2006: Lloyd James Austin III served as chief of staff of US Central Command at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida.
• 2009: As Director of the Joint Staff, Austin assumed command of the XVIII Corps.
• As of September 1, 2010: Austin was appointed as the Commanding General (CG) of the United States Forces in Iraq (USF-I).
• 2012: Austin became the United States Army Vice Chief of Staff (VCSA).
• March 22, 2013, marked the beginning of Austin's tenure as CENTCOM commander.
