In 1950, Ronald E. McNair was born in Lake City, South Carolina. Though he came from a low-income family, he was determined to succeed in both academics and life. In 1967, Ronald McNair graduated from Carver High School as valedictorian. At 26, Ronald McNair received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after receiving his bachelor's degree in Physics from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
Career:
In 1971: As the recipient of a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering physics, magna cum laude, in 1971, Ronald McNair was also a member of that faculty.
In 1976: Under the guidance of Michael Feld at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ronald McNair earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 1976.
In 1978: McNair was selected from ten thousand applicants as one of thirty-five astronaut candidates.
From February 3 to 11, 1984: Ronald McNairwas a mission specialist aboard Challenger during STS-41-B.
January 18, 1986: After taking off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Ronald McNair was part of the crew when the Challenger exploded nine miles over the Atlantic.
A former employee of Malibu's Hughes Research Laboratory, Ronald McNair became an expert in laser physics.
