Ronald Erwin McNair (October 21, 1950 – January 28, 1986) was an American NASA astronaut and physicist. He was born in Lake City, South Carolina, and became the second African American to fly in space on the STS-41-B mission. He died in the Challenger disaster while serving as one of three mission specialists on STS-51-L. McNair received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering physics from North Carolina A&T State University and a PhD in physics from MIT. He was also a 5th-degree black belt in karate and a member of the Bahá'í Faith.
