Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was born in 1934 in Klushino, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. The first human to venture into outer space was Gagarin, a Soviet pilot, and cosmonaut who made one orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961 in the Vostok 1 capsule. As a result of achieving this major milestone in the Space Race, he received many medals and titles, including the highest award for his nation, Hero of the Soviet Union.
