Mary Hunter Austin, a well-known American writer, was born in Illinois. Shortly after, Jennie, Austin's sister, who was the most understanding and encouraging, passed away from diphtheria. These deaths profoundly impacted Austin's life. Her mother was far more preoccupied with her older brother and disregarded and did not understand her. As a result, Austin started looking to herself for assistance at a young age. The family relocated to a property in the desert close to the San Joaquin Valley. Austin came to appreciate the desert.

Career:

Austin had always wanted to be a writer, but once her father and sister passed away, she started to write full-time.

Austin immersed herself in academics, started writing poetry at age ten, and excelled in school. Austin enrolled in Carlinville's Blackburn College in 1884 to study art, but she eventually switched her focus to science.

In 1885, Austin also attended the State Normal School in Bloomington, Illinois, for a short period.

Austin earned a science degree from Blackburn College in 1888.

Austin was also friendly with local Chinese and Native American laborers and other non-white members.

Achievements and Awards:

Austin's debut book, The Land of Little Rain, which became a classic and is still well recognized, was released in 1903. It was made up of 14 sketches that were all about the Native Americans who lived in the Mojave Desert.

Essays on the struggle between life and death were common. Her novel immediately made her famous. Austin's marriage ended when she was developing as a writer.

Unknown facts:

Austin worked as a teacher in Mountain View, California, and she would frequently spend the evenings alone in the desert.
