Larry Gelbart was born on February 25, 1928, and died on September 11, 2009. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Jewish immigrants Harry Gelbart and Frieda Sturner, who both came to America from Dombrowa Prussia, a town in Silesia now called Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland. He was discharged honorably after serving one year and eleven days with the rank of sergeant. Gelbart was not drafted for service during the Korean War due to those last 11 days.

The comedian started writing jokes for Danny Thomas's radio show at the age of sixteen, after his father, Thomas's barber, showed him some of Gelbart's work.
He wrote the series pilot, then produced, often wrote and occasionally directed its first four seasons from 1972 to 1976, as one of the main inspirations for its creation.

In 1982, Gelbart and Murray Schisgal co-wrote the screenplay for Tootsie, his most famous screenplay. His adapted screenplay for 1977's Oh, God! was also nominated for an Academy Award. The film stars John Denver and George Burns.

Gelbart died of cancer on September 11, 2009, at his Beverly Hills home. His wife of 53 years, Pat Gelbart, said they "finished each other's sentences" after 53 years of marriage. She declined to specify the type of cancer he had. His remains were interred at the Culver City Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.
