William James Collins was born on March 22, 1941, in Queens and White Plains. As Poet Laureate of the United States between 2001 and 2003, he is an American poet. Lehman College appointed him as a Distinguished Professor (retired, 2016). Collins was selected as the New York State Poet for 2004 through 2006, as well as a Literary Lion (1992) of the New York Public Library. In 2016, Collins was inducted into the academy. Stony Brook Southampton will hire him as a teacher in its MFA program in 2020.
Career:
In 1968: Collins joined the faculty of Lehman College in the Bronx as a Distinguished Professor of English.
2001 to 2003: William James Collins held the title of "U.S. Poet" Laureate.
2004 and 2006: Collins served as the State of New York's Poet Laureate.
2013: Collins served as Poetry Consultant for Smithsonian Magazine.
During his 2014 trip to Russia, he served as a cultural emissary of the "U.S. State Department."
1997: The Best Cigarette, Collins' 1997 recording of 34 poems, became a bestseller.
2012: The animated series Martha Speaks featured Collins as himself.

The Collins family moved to Westchester County, New York, in 1977 after Collins married Diane Olbright. Divorce has since taken place between the couple.
