William James Collins, born on March 22, 1941, is an American poet and former Poet Laureate of the United States. He is a Distinguished Professor at Lehman College and was recognized as a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library. Collins is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Romantic Poetry from the University of California, Riverside. He founded The Mid-Atlantic Review in 1975 and has taught workshops across the United States and in Ireland. Collins has been invited to read at The White House three times and has traveled to Russia as a cultural emissary of the U.S. State Department.
