Maria Owings Shriver is an American writer and author, a niece of John F. Kennedy, a former leading lady of California, and the driving force behind the nonprofit The Women's Alzheimer's Movement. Shriver was married to actor and retired California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger; the divorce was finalised in 2021 after she filed for it. Shriver won an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences award and two Emmy Awards as executive producer of The Alzheimer's Project for creating a "television show with a conscience."

In 1986: Prior to joining NBC News, Shriver started her career in journalism at CBS station KYW-TV where she briefly served as the CBS Morning News anchor.

In 2003: When Shriver's husband declared his candidature for the 2003 California governor recall election, she took a leave of absence from NBC News without pay.
