Stephanopoulos served as a Democratic Party advisor before becoming a journalist. He gained early success as Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign communications director. Later, he served as a senior advisor for policy and strategy before departing in December 1996.

• 1998: George Stephanopoulos worked on Michael Dukakis' 1988 presidential campaign. His attraction to this campaign was Dukakis's background as a Greek-American liberal from Massachusetts.
• 2002: George Stephanopoulos became the host of This Week in September 2002, and ABC News officially named him chief Washington correspondent in December 2005. Names of new hosts were added to the program's title.
• 2008: The twenty-first and ultimately final Democratic Party presidential debate was moderated by Stephanopoulos on April 16, 2008.
