Elliot Handler was an American toy designer and businessman, best known as the co-founder of Mattel Inc., one of the world's largest toy companies. He was born on April 9, 1916, in New York City, and he died on July 21, 2011, in Los Angeles, California.

Handler grew up in New York City and showed an early interest in art and design. After serving in the Army during World War II, he began his career in the toy industry, working as a designer for various companies. In 1945, he and his wife Ruth founded Mattel, initially as a picture frame company.
