Elizabeth I ruled England (1558 to 1603) and is undoubtedly one of the greatest monarchs in English history. As the Virgin Queen, she ruled England for 45 years during a glorious period in history. During the time of Elizabeth's reign, England was economically bankrupt, religiously divided, and politically threatened by France and Spain, the two greatest powers of the time.
Accession & Reign:
After King Henry VIII died in 1547, his son, Prince Edward VI, became king. Nine was a very young age for him. On July 6, 1553, however, he died for unknown reasons.
In 1559: Elizabeth I became Queen of England after being anointed and crowned. There was widespread acceptance and appreciation for her appointment.
1560: French invasion threats were removed from the north by the Treaty of Edinburgh.
1567: As a result of several assassination attempts, Queen Elizabeth imprisoned her cousin. The execution of Mary took place in 1587 after she had been imprisoned for 20 years.
1585: Queen Elizabeth supported the Protestant rebellion against Spain when a dispute erupted in the Netherlands.
Death:
March 24, 1603: Her health deteriorated significantly in March 1603. It was at Richmond Palace that she passed away.
Trivia:
Whitehall was the final destination for her coffin. In Westminster Abbey, she was interred with her half-sister, Mary, in a tomb during her funeral.
