Gerda Lerner, a well-known Austrian-American historian, was born in Vienna. Lerner graduated from New York University with a master's degree in history and earned her undergraduate degree from Columbia University. American-born historian, author, and feminist Gerda Lerner was of Austrian descent. She went on to become a trailblazing historian of women's history and was among the first academics to mainstream the study of women's history.

Gerda Lerner Career:

For her contributions to the study of women's history over the course of her career, Lerner was honored with a plethora of accolades, including a MacArthur Fellowship and the National Humanities Medal.

She was a fellow of the American Antiquarian Society and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Lerner was a committed feminist and a pioneer in the women's rights movement in addition to her academic career. 

The Creation of Patriarchy by Lerner, published in 1986, is a seminal investigation of the history of patriarchy and the place of women in early societies. The book questioned conventional beliefs about women's place in history and contributed to the development of the study of women's history.
