James Buchanan, a leading political leader, was the 15th President of the U.S., serving from 1857 to 1861. James Buchanan was the only President from Pennsylvania. He is regarded as one of the least successful Presidents in U.S. history, primarily due to his handling of the issue of slavery and the lead-up to the American Civil War. Before becoming President, Buchanan served as a Congressman, Minister to Russia, Secretary of State, and Minister to the United Kingdom.
