Victor Peter Chang was born on November 21, 1936, and died on July 4, 1991. He was a Chinese-born Australian cardiac surgeon and has been credited with pioneering heart transplantation in Australia. It was one of the most notorious murders in Australia’s history and left the country in shock. The Australian Government gave him a state funeral, and he was voted Australian of the Century at the People’s Choice Awards in 1999.

• Victor Chang had been born to Chinese-British parents who were Australians by birth and lived in Shanghai. He grew up in Hong Kong, where he studied in Kowloon Tong for primary school for two years at St. Paul’s College. Chang was sent alongside his younger sister by his father Aubrey to stay with extended family members in Sydney, arriving from Hong Kong in 1951.
• Victor Chang attended Belmore Boys’ High School at Belmore. He completed his secondary education at Christian Brothers’ High School, Lewisham. On April 7th 1948, Chang lost his mother to breast cancer when she was only thirty-three, prompting him to think about becoming a doctor at twelve years old.

• After his medical education, Chang interned at St Vincent’s Hospital under the guidance of cardiac surgeon Mark Shanahan, who sent him to London with British surgeon Aubrey York Mason.
• Victor Chang became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1966 and underwent training in Cardiothoracic Surgery. In London, he met and married Ann Simmons.
Victor Chang Death
• Victor Chang survived two gunshots to his head during a failed attempt at extortion in July 1991. His body was found slumped on the pavement next to his Mercedes-Benz 500SL, which had been parked on the gutter in Mosman.

• Victor Chang was offered a public burial. He was cremated, and his remains are placed under a memorial plaque at Green Park. The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Website refers to this murder as a “tragic circumstance.”
Victor Chang Legacy
• In 1984, Victor Chang started the Victor Chang Foundation, which funds two areas dear to him: education and innovation for cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. Even today, the organization is led by his daughter, Vanessa Chang.
Victor Chang Personal Life
• Victor Chang met his wife, Ann Simmons, in 1966. Ann became unwell during a party and had to be taken to North Cheam, London’s St Anthony’s hospital, where her husband was on duty that day. They were blessed with three children named Matthew, Vanessa, and Marcus.
