C aldwell Blakeman Esselstyn Jr. was born in New York City in 1933. He grew up in a medical family; both his father and grandpa were well-known doctors. He played on the football team at Yale University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1956. He continued his education in Cleveland, Ohio's Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1961.
Caldwell Esselstyn Career in Medicine
Esselstyn started his residency at the Cleveland Clinic after receiving his medical degree, and he later rose to the position of group leader for the breast cancer task force there.
From 1991 to 1992, Caldwell presided over the American Society of Endocrine Surgeons.
When Esselstyn started concentrating on the prevention and treatment of heart disease later in his career, he made his greatest contribution to medicine.
He started a study in 1985 that would later serve as the foundation for his 2007 book, "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease."
Esselstyn then founded the Cleveland Clinic's Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Reversal Program, which has grown to become one of the most effective worldwide initiatives for preventing and curing heart disease through diet and lifestyle changes.
Caldwell Esselstyn Advocacy for Plant-Based Diet
For more than three decades, Esselstyn has been an outspoken proponent of the advantages of a plant-based diet. He has given numerous speeches on the issue, including one at TEDx in 2012 that has received more than 4 million views.
Along with his work at the Cleveland Clinic, Esselstyn has contributed to a number of books and videos that support plant-based diets, such as his son Rip Esselstyn's "The Engine 2 Diet" and the film "Forks Over Knives."

It is well known that Esselstyn has worked to promote the advantages of a plant-based diet. He has won various accolades and prizes, including the Plantrician Project Luminary Award in 2017 and the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine in 2010.
Caldwell Esselstyn Personal Life
Esselstyn and his wife Ann Crile Esselstyn have been together for more than 60 years. Ann is a supporter of plant-based diets and a breast cancer survivor. Rip Esselstyn, one of the couple's four children, has continued his father's work as a proponent of plant-based diets.
