Akhil Kumar is a boxer from India who has won many national and international boxing championships. He uses an "open guarded" boxing technique. For his successes in international boxing, the Indian government awarded him the Arjuna Award in 2005. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India selected Akhil Kumar and Mary Kom as national viewers for boxing in March 2017.
Career
In 1999 – Akhil first participated in the 6th YMCA Junior International Boxing Championship and won a gold medal.
In 2004 – He earned second place at the 1st AIBA Asian 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Guangzhou, China.
In 2005 – He took part in the 4th Commonwealth Federation Boxing Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and won the gold medal.
In 2006 – Akhil won a gold medal in the Bantamweight 54 kg division at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
In 2008 – In the quarterfinals of the AIBA World Cup 2008 held in Moscow, Akhil defeated Marcel Schinder of Germany by 15-6. There was a tie in the semifinals, 4-4, but the judges gave the match to his rival. Akhil won the bronze medal.
