John Lee Anthony Tapia was born on February 13, 1967 & died on May 27, 2012. His professional boxing career spanned from 1988-2011. He won multiple world titles in three weight classes. These include the unified IBF and WBO super flyweight titles, the unified WBA and WBO bantamweight titles, and the unified IBF featherweight title. The Ring magazine named his 1999 loss to Paulie Ayala the Fight of the Year. The International Boxing Hall of Fame inducted Tapia posthumously in 2017.

• Tapia's professional boxing career began on March 25, 1988, against Efren Chavez in Irvine, California. Boxing lasted four rounds before the fight was declared a draw.
• Johnny Tapiawon the 1983 New Mexico State Golden Gloves tournament and the 1983 and 1985 National Golden Gloves tournaments at light flyweight and flyweight, respectively.
• Johnny Tapiawon seven bouts in 1990, including an eight-round decision over Jesus Chong, a technical knockout of Roland Gomez in Reno that earned him the USBA super flyweight title, and a twelve-round decision over Luigi Camputaro.
• Johnny Tapiadefeated Henry Martnez in eleven rounds at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on October 12, 1994. A former champion, Rolando Bohol, was knocked out in the second round by him. Tapia defeated Jose Rafael Sosa by decision in his first title defense.
• Johnny Tapiaannounced on January 17, 2007, that he would face Ilido Julio in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, on February 23, then retire. Tapia promised to win the bout, promoting it as The Final Fury. Tapia won the fight by majority decision, 98-92, 96-94, 95-95.
