Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian-born mechanical engineer and American astronaut to go to space. She flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia for the first time in 1997 as a primary robotic arm operator and mission specialist. She earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College in India before moving to the United States in 1982 and earning a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Chawla earned a second Master's degree in 1986 and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1988.

In 1988 – Chawla started her career at NASA Ames Research Center, where she studied computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on vertical and short take-off and landing (V/STOL) topics.
In 1993 – She became Vice President and Research Scientist at Overset Methods, Inc., where she specialized in the simulation of moving multiple body problems.
In 1997 – Her first space mission started with a six-person crew on the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87.
In 2001 – Chawla opted for her second flight as part of the STS-107 crew.
In 2003 – She died along with her six colleagues in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster during the mission's 28th mission, STS-107 when the Shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
