The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a 2012 fantasy adventure directed by Peter Jackson and adapted from J. R. R. Tolkien’s much-loved novel. It takes viewers back to Middle-earth, decades before the events of The Lord of the Rings, to tell the story of how an ordinary hobbit becomes involved in a quest that will change his life.Show More
The film combines a homely world of food, gardens, and familiar comforts with the scale and danger of an ancient kingdom waiting to be reclaimed.
Bilbo Baggins is content with his quiet life in the Shire until the wizard Gandalf arrives with a proposal that disrupts everything. Gandalf brings a company of thirteen dwarves to Bilbo’s home, led by Thorin Oakenshield. Their goal is to travel east and reclaim Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, once the home of the dwarves and the source of their lost wealth and pride. The mountain was taken by the dragon Smaug, whose attack scattered the dwarves and left Thorin determined to restore his people’s homeland.
Although Bilbo initially resists the idea of leaving home, he eventually joins the company as its burglar. The journey quickly becomes more than a long walk across unfamiliar country. The travellers encounter trolls, goblins, wargs, dangerous landscapes, and unexpected allies. Their route tests the group’s courage and cooperation, while Bilbo discovers that resourcefulness and compassion can matter as much as strength or battle experience. A particularly consequential encounter in the goblin tunnels brings him face to face with Gollum, where a mysterious ring enters his possession.
The film’s central tension comes from the different qualities each traveller brings to the expedition. Bilbo’s caution gradually meets his curiosity and hidden bravery; Gandalf combines foresight with a willingness to trust others; Thorin carries the burden of leadership, memory, and pride; and Balin offers experience, loyalty, and a steady perspective within the company. Their differences shape how they face danger and how they understand the purpose of the quest.
