Beast of War is an Australian war horror thriller directed and written by Kiah Roache-Turner. Its setting is the Timor Sea in 1942, where a troop of young Australian soldiers is travelling toward the frontline.Show More
Their journey turns catastrophic when Japanese fighter planes attack and sink their ship. With the vessel destroyed and help far away, the survivors gather floating wreckage and turn it into a makeshift raft. The ocean offers no safe refuge: the men must cope with injuries, dwindling space, exhaustion, fear, and the uncertainty of whether anyone will find them.
Their situation becomes even more frightening when a great white shark begins circling the wreckage, drawn by blood in the water. The threat from the predator is only one part of the struggle. The soldiers are young, stressed, and very different from one another, so arguments, fear, loyalty, and questions of leadership can become as dangerous as the sea itself.
At the heart of the film is the tension between individual survival and the need to depend on other people. Courage does not always mean being fearless; sometimes it means staying focused, helping someone else, or making a difficult choice when every option carries a risk. The cramped raft intensifies every disagreement and forces the survivors to reveal what matters most to them.
The story features characters including Leo, Will, Stan, and Teddy, played by Mark Coles Smith, Joel Nankervis, Maximillian Johnson, and Lee Tiger Halley. Their ordeal gives the movie its human stakes amid the action and horror.
