Jane Hyatt Yolen was born on 11th February 1939, is an American fantasy, science fiction, and children's author. Her best-known work is The Devil's Arithmetic, a Holocaust novella. She delivered the inaugural Alice G. Smith Lecture in 1989. The 400th book by Yolen, Bear Outside, will be published in early 2021.

• Jane Yolenworked at several magazines and publishers in New York City during the 1960s, including Gold Medal Books, Routledge Books, and Alfred A. Knopf Juvenile Books. She ran her own Harcourt Brace imprint, Jane Yolen Books, from 1990 to 1996.
• Jane Yolenwas considered a poet, journalist, and nonfiction writer, but she ended up writing children's books. The book she published on her 22nd birthday was Pirates in Petticoats.
