Alonzo Mourning Jr. was born on February 8, 1970. He is vice president of player programs and development for the Miami Heat, a top-ranked American former professional basketball player. Mourning spent most of his 15-year NBA career with the Heat. During his senior year, he averaged 25 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 blocked shots. Many publications recognized him as Player of the Year, including USA Today, Parade, Gatorade, and Naismith. He was the top recruit in the 1988 class, ahead of Christian Laettner, Shawn Kemp, Billy Owens, Kenny Williams, Stanley Roberts, Rick Fox, and Malik Sealy.
Alonzo Mourning Career:
• Alonzo Mourning was selected by the Charlotte Hornets as the second overall pick, right behind Shaquille O'Neal in 1992.
• Alonzo Mourning averaged 21.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.47 blocks during his debut season 1993. Only Shaquille O'Neal received a higher ranking for Rookie of the Year than him. In 1994–95, they guided the Hornets to a 50–win campaign.
• Alonzo Mourning and the Heat agreed to a seven-year, $105 million contract in July 1996. A 61-game winning streak helped the Heat finish second in the Eastern Conference behind the Bulls, the defending champions.
• A four-year deal was signed with the New Jersey Nets in July 2003. On November 24, 2003, Mourning announced his retirement from the NBA after 12 games.
• On December 19, he got a successful kidney transplant. He was a consistent player on the Nets' regular season squad the following year. He contributed 19.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game on average for the Heat in 1997–1998.
• Alonzo Mourning played in the 1995 NBA All-Star Game, scoring 10 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. He was a member of the team, leading it in scoring (21.3 points per game), rebounding (9.9 rebounds per game), blocked shots (2.92 shots per game), and field goal percentage (.519). 
• On January 22, 2009, the NBA announced Mourning's retirement. In his speech to the media during the press conference, he said, "At 38, I feel my physical limits have been reached."
