About (Profile/Biography):
Grace Hopper, a well-known computer scientist, was born in New York City. Grace Murray Hopper is still recognised for her contributions to the subject. Not only did Hopper's contributions to computing technology transform how computers were used, but also how they were created and programmed.
Grace Hopper Education:
Grace Hopper studied mathematics at Vassar College, where she graduated in 1928 with a Phi Beta Kappa. She continued on to Yale University to earn a master's in mathematics, which she did in 1930. Following graduation, Hopper accepted a number of teaching posts at several American colleges before eventually transitioning into computer research and development.
Grace Hopper Invention:
The computer industry was completely transformed by Hopper's discovery of a compiler, a programme that converts written code into machine code. She received multiple patents for her work, including the original compiler patent. She also paved the way for women in technology and throughout her career made substantial contributions to the field of computer science.
Grace Hopper Career Achievements:
Grace Hopper joined the navy reserves shortly after the start of World War II and worked as one of the first programmers for Harvard's Mark I computer.
Later, Grace worked with the UNIVAC I, the first commercial computer, and created some of the earliest compiler-related tools, such as FLOW-MATIC and COBOL, which completely changed how computers were programmed.
President Ronald Reagan presented her with a National Medal of Technology in 1983 for her contributions to computing.
Grace Hopper Conference
Grace Hopper is also credited for founding the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) of Women in Computing conference, which annually attracts thousands of women working in the technology industry.
Grace Hopper Death:
Grace Hopper, 85, passed away peacefully on January 1st, 1992, at her home in Arlington County, Virginia, from natural causes.
