Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was a well-known Indian politician and part of the Indian National Congress. When she was selected to serve as India's third prime minister in 1966, she became the nation's first and only female prime minister. Gandhi was the name of Jawaharlal Nehru's daughter, India's first prime minister. After her father, she served as prime minister of India for the second-longest periods, from January 1966 to March 1977 and once more from January 1980 till her assassination in October 1984. During Nehru's international travels, Gandhi was his chief of staff from 1947 to 1964.

In 1934: Indira attended school intermittently until matriculation, mostly at home with tutors.
In 1941: She was able to get into England, and after leaving she went back to India without finishing her studies at Oxford.
In 1950: Gandhi served as Congress's president.
