About (Profile/Biography):
Assam's first Chief Minister after independence was Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi. Assam had been undivided under his leadership before independence. His non-violent approach helped India win independence from British rule as a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1947, Bordoloi played a major role in preventing Assam from being absorbed into East Pakistan. Most Muslim political leaders from Bengal, many of whom were affiliated with the Muslim League, wanted Assam, a region largely dominated by Hindus, to be included in East Pakistan. Some feared communal riots and an upsurge of protests.

In 1922: His political career began in 1922 when he joined the Indian National Congress as a volunteer. Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent politicians were close friends during the 1920s.
In 1926: The Reception Committee appointed him Assistant General Secretary of the Congress in Guwahati.
By boycotting Government institutions and establishing private colleges and schools in protest of the 1929 Cunningham Circular, he was instrumental in establishing B. Borooah College and KamrupAkademy in Guwahati.
As a result, he stayed away from political activities during 1930-33 and dedicated himself to a number of social causes.

Unknown facts:
After separate meetings between the new Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten and Mahatma Gandhi, Congress, and the Muslim League in 1947, the decision to partition India and Pakistan was reached. However, Bordoloi ensured that Assam remained an Indian territory rather than being incorporated into East Pakistan.
