Thomas Eakins was an American realist painter and photographer who lived from July 25, 1844, to June 25, 1916. One of the most significant American artists of the 19th century, he is highly recognized. His work is now regarded as some of the most significant American art of the 19th century. Thomas Eakins was a trailblazing figure in American painting who redefined the way people saw the human form and pushed the limits of realism. His stirring and perceptive works continue to serve as an example for creators and admirers of art worldwide.

Eakins was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he also attended Central High School. The artist Thomas Eakins taught him at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he later studied art.

Thomas Eakins Career:

Although Eakins started out as a genre and portrait painter, his dramatic and accurate portrayals of life and science have made him a household name. He spent several years learning about and watching dissection and surgery because he was fascinated by the human form and the intricate details of human anatomy.

Eakins pushed the limits of realism in American art throughout his career and was unafraid to take on contentious subjects like nudity and the intricacies of human physiology.

He was one of the first artists to employ photography as a medium for producing his paintings. He was also a brilliant photographer. He was a pioneer in the art of photographic realism and drew inspiration from images to produce extremely precise and finely detailed portraits of the human form.

Thomas Eakins Major Works/Paintings:

"The Gross Clinic" (1875), "The Agnew Clinic" (1889), "Wrestling School" (1899), and "The Swimming Hole" are some of Eakins' best-known pieces (1884).

Additionally, he painted several notable portraits of people throughout his time, such as Walt Whitman, Thomas P. Blatchford, and William Rush.

During his lifetime, Eakins' work appeared in number of esteemed art associations, such as the National Academy of Design and the National Society of Mural Painters.
