Randall Darius Jackson, a great musician, was born on June 23, 1956. It is perhaps best known that he was a judge on American Idol, in which capacity he took part as a musician, record executive, and television presenter. As a session musician in the 1980s, Jackson played bass guitar for many jazz, pop, rock, and R&B performers over the course of his career. As one of the longest-serving judges on American Idol, Jackson is probably best known for his work as an executive producer for MTV's America's Best Dance Crew and for his appearances on American Idol.

As far back as the early 1980s, he was a member of the rock band Taxxi and played on three albums for Jean-Luc Ponty as well as his own albums. There was a time when he worked for the rock group Journey between 1986 and 1987.
