Booker T. Jones began playing the piano at an early age and later learned to play the saxophone, guitar, bass, and organ. Jones' musical education came from his father, who was a high school band teacher, and from studying classical music at Indiana University.
Booker T. Jones Stax Records and the MGs:
In the early 1960s, Booker T. Jones became a session musician and producer at Stax Records in Memphis.
He formed the house band, Booker T. & the MGs, with fellow Stax musicians Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr.
The group provided the backing tracks for many of Stax's biggest hits, including songs by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Sam & Dave.
