In Eastman, Georgia, on December 12, 1947, Willie E. Gary was born. Gary spent three days a week farming with his family and two half-days in school. At the age of 13, Gary started a lawn care business to help support his family. Gary received a football scholarship to Shaw University, where he studied business administration and earned his bachelor's degree in 1971. Gary graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1974.
Willie E. Gary Career:
• After Canadian businessman Raymond Loewen broke a contract with Mississippi funeral home operator Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe, Gary filed a lawsuit on O'Keefe's behalf against Loewen.
• After then, the case was resolved for $175 million; as a result of Gary's win, Loewen finally left his firm.
• The Loewen Funeral Company case served as the inspiration for the 2023 film The Burial, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx.
• Gary defeated Disney in 2000 with a $240 million ruling for allegedly stealing the idea for the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
• On appeal, Gary's victory over R.J. Reynolds was reversed. The case was based on the 1996 lung cancer death of Michael Johnson of Escambia County, Florida.
• In addition to the National Bar Association, Gary is a member of the Florida Bar, American Bar Association, and NAACP.
