Lenny Bruce was arrested in 1964 on obscenity-related charges. After a few years, Cochran joined Gerald Lenoir in private practice until he eventually founded his own company, Cochran, Atkins & Evans, in Los Angeles.

From 1960 to 1977, Johnnie married Barbara Berry Cochran; from 1985 to 2005, to Sylvia Dale. Tiffany and Melodie, from his first marriage, and Jonathan, from a previous relationship, were his three children. In December 2003, a brain tumor was discovered, and he underwent surgery in April 2004
