About (Profile/Biography):
The second African American to hold the title of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court was Clarence Thomas. After Thurgood Marshall, he took up the mantle when he retired. Born in Georgia, Thomas also showed interest in becoming a priest. This led him to register at a seminary, but after a turn of events that included political happenings and the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., things changed for him. It is believed this caused him to second-guess his choice and later start his legal career after graduating from Yale Law School.
Clarence Thomas Career:
In 1981, Thomas was chosen by Ronald Reagan to go on the United States Court of Appeal, and then he was nominated by George H.W. Bush for the Supreme Court position in 1991. He held that role for four years. During his confirmation process there was a huge obstacle thrown at him — Anita Hill. She accused him of sexual harassment. This caused the Senate to almost not vote him in but he still managed to win with a really close race of 52-48. When it came to representing conservatism on the court, Thomas always did his best. The rigidity of his reading in law was well known along with his extreme opposition to affirmative action. Thurgood Marshall was the first African American to hold a spot on the Supreme court. Then came Thomas as the second. Throughout his tenure he wrote several noteworthy judgements including dissenting opinion in Obergefell v hodges which established same-sex marriage as a constitutional right.
