Edward James Martin Koppel is an American television journalist with British ancestry who is best known for serving as Nightline's anchor from the show's premiere in 1980 until 2005. He worked for ABC for 20 years as a television journalist and news anchor prior to Nightline. He gained a reputation as one of the best serious interviewers on American television after taking over Nightline. The programme had a nightly audience of around 7.5 million viewers five years after its 1980 premiere. Koppel worked as a news reporter for NPR and BBC World News America after escaping Nightline, as well as contributing to Rock Center with Brian Williams. He also served as executive editor for the Discovery Channel.

In 1963: He was the youngest reporter ever hired by ABC Radio News for Flair Reports.
In 1964: Koppel began covering presidential nomination conventions with his first one.
In 1966: He switched from radio to national television and was appointed the ABC News reporter for the Vietnam War.
