In 2005, Glenn Greenwald visited Rio de Janeiro for a long vacation, meeting a 19-year-old boy from the Jacarezinho Favela who had spent his childhood there. They moved in together shortly after they met; later, they married. Miranda later served as a Congressman for the left-wing PDT party, having previously represented PSOL. Brazil was the home of the couple. Miranda and Greenwald announced in 2017 that they had gained legal guardianship of two brothers from Maceió, a city in Northeastern Brazil. The two boys were formally adopted in Brazil in 2018.
