About (Profile/Biography):
Hiram Maxim, a well-known American-British inventor, was born in Maine. While living on his father's farm, he only had a common-school education, but in his spare time, he studied science. He started working as an apprentice to a carriage maker when he was 14. He later joined his uncle's engineering company in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Hiram Maxim Career:
Maxim created a single-barrel gun that might fire 500 bullets per minute in 1885.
Maxim came to England in 1881. He began experimenting with ways to improve guns and in 1883, created an automatic pistol based on a completely novel idea.
Maxim first manufactured the firearm on his own, but in 1888 and 1896, his business combined with those of Nordenfeldt and Vickers.
With the assistance of his brother and business partner Hudson Maxim, Hiram kept working on the postponed explosive and high explosives, a smokeless powder derived from nitroglycerin and cotton.
The overall output of Maxim totaled 271 patents. He unsuccessfully attempted to build a steam engine small enough to power a biplane but realized that success required an internal combustion engine. He passed away in November 1916 in New York.
