Lewis Blaine Hershey, a well known American military officer, was born in Indiana. Hershey continued to fight in both World Wars I and II, ultimately becoming a Major General. He went to the neighborhood public schools and completed his teacher education at Tri-State University (now Trine University). He was an elementary school teacher and principal in the neighborhood. He had four kids with Ellen Divert (1892-1977): Kathryn, Edgar, George, and Ellen.

Hershey served in the military as well as being an enthusiastic stamp collector and a member of the United States Philatelic Society.
Hershey was renowned for his tenacious devotion to duty and strong character.
Hershey rose to prominence in the American military following the war and oversaw the Selective Service System from 1940 until 1970.
President Richard Nixon then fired him from that position and replaced him with a presidential advisor before promoting him to full General.
