Pearl Zane Grey was born on January 31, 1872 and died on October 23, 1939. Among his many accomplishments, he was an author and dentist. The American frontier, which he idealized, was the subject of his popular adventure novels and stories in literature and art. One of his best-selling books was Riders of the Purple Sage (1912). Aside from its success as a printed work, his books have been adapted in the film industry and continue to have an impact today.
Career:
1896: The University of Pennsylvania offered Grey a baseball scholarship, which allowed him to study dentistry there and join the Sigma Nu fraternity. He graduated in 1896.
Grey began practicing medicine in New York City soon after he graduated as Dr. Zane Grey.
In 1898: Grey played with the Newark, New Jersey Colts, and for several years with the Orange Athletic Club in minor league baseball.
1895: As teammates for the Interstate League's Findlay Sluggers of 1895, Zane Grey and Romer Grey were brothers.
1909: Buffalo Jones' adventures are described in Grey's 1909 novel The Last of the Plainsmen.
1910: With the birth of his first child on the horizon, Grey felt the need to finish his next novel, "The Heritage of the Desert." It was written in four months.
