Inspired by the popularity of his first book, Patterson went on to write numerous other books, including "Virgin" (1980), "See How They Run," and "Season of the Machete," all of which fell flat with critics and readers.
James was devastated by the loss of his lover Jane, who had a brain tumor, and gave up writing to concentrate on his career.
James also experienced high blood pressure and other health issues. He quickly advanced to the position of creative director of "JWT" within a few years.
Patterson modified his writing style when he started writing again. He began working on "The Midnight Club" by creating a rough draught of the plot that included all of the crucial events.
