Donald Patrick Conroy, a famous American author, who was born on October 26, 1945, and died on March 4, 2016. A famous American author and memoirist, he wrote several books adapted into films, including The Water are Wide, The Lords of Discipline, The Prince of Tides, and The Great Santini. His work is considered a major contribution to Southern literature in the late 20th century.
Pat Conroy Career:
Against rival Virginia Military Institute in quadruple overtime, his senior basketball team won the longest game in Southern Conference history against the underdog.
Lt. Colonel Thomas Nugent Courvousie served from 1961 to 1968 as Assistant Commandant of Cadets at The Citadel, and that book is a collection of anecdotes about cadet life.
Conrack, starring Jon Voight, was released in 1974 as a feature film. The book was adapted into a television series by Hallmark in 2006.
As editor-at-large of Story River Books, the University of South Carolina Press' newly created fiction division, Conroy was appointed in May 2013.
A novel titled The Great Santini was published in 1976 by Conroy. 
A four-year-old memoir, The Death of Santini, by Conroy, recounts his father's volatile relationship up until his death in 1998.
Pat Conroy Death:
On his Facebook page on February 15, 2016, Conroy announced that he was being treated for pancreatic cancer. On March 8, 2016, Conroy's funeral took place at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaufort, South Carolina, where he died on March 4, 2016.
