Ed McBain (born Salvatore Albert Lombino, October 15, 1926 – July 6, 2005) was an American crime writer. He is best known for his 87th Precinct detective novels, which were set in a fictional city and followed the work of detectives in a police precinct. McBain's 87th Precinct novels were groundbreaking in the crime fiction genre and were credited with helping to create the police procedural subgenre. He was a prolific writer and published more than 50 novels during his lifetime.
