Sally Kristen Ride was one of the known American astronauts and physicists. She was born on May 26, 1951, in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Following cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova in 1963 and Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982, she is known as the first American woman to join NASA and the third woman to fly in space in 1983. When she flew into space at 32, she was the youngest American astronaut to have done so.

In 1973: Sally Kristen Ride graduated from Stanford University with a physics and English literature degree.
In 1975: Sally Kristen Ride earned a Master of Science in physics.
In 1978: Sally Kristen Ride received a doctorate in physics for his research on the interaction of X-rays with the interstellar medium.
on January 16, 1978: Sally Kristen Ride was notified of her selection as part of NASA Astronaut Group 8 via telephone.
On June 18, 1983: Sally Kristen Ride became the first American woman in space and the third woman when the Space Shuttle Challenger took off from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
As of July 1, 1989: Sally Kristen Ride became the director of the California Space Institute at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
