Rakesh Sharma is a retired Indian Air Force pilot who flew on the Soviet Interkosmos Soyuz T-11 on April 3, 1984. He is the only Indian citizen to have traveled in space, though there have been other astronauts with Indian ancestors who are not Indian citizens. Ravish Malhotra, another Air Force pilot, was put on standby. Sharma went to St. George's Grammar School in Hyderabad and graduated from Nizam College. In July 1966, he enrolled at the National Defence Academy as an air force plebe, and he was appointed as a pilot in the Indian Air Force in 1970.

In 1982 – He opted to become a cosmonaut and travel to space as part of a joint Indian Air Force and Soviet Interkosmos space program.
In 1984 – Sharma became India's first space traveler. He launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard the Soviet rocket Soyuz T-11.
In 1987 – Sharma joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited after retiring as a wing commander (HAL).
In 2001 – His flying career ended with his retirement.
