Deborah wants to experience college on her own terms, but family expectations, campus pressure, friendships, romance, and her parents' watchful presence make that independence complicated. Her roommate Rashida Duvall is a first-generation college student from Compton studying criminal justice, whose disciplined, community-minded approach initially clashes with Deborah's free-spirited nature. Shaquille Johnson, a highly recruited football star and Ron Johnson's son, arrives at Hillman carrying both athletic expectations and the weight of a promise connected to his late mother. Amir Rodale, a street-smart psychology major from Harlem, is resourceful and emotionally perceptive, but often better at solving other people's problems than confronting his own. Across its ten-episode first season, the series uses Hillman life, relationships, family legacy, student activism, academic choices, and the realities of a modern HBCU campus to explore identity, independence, friendship, grief, ambition, and belonging.
