Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time Quiz

Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time is a 2026 National Geographic three-part documentary series revisiting the 2010 San José Mine disaster in northern Chile. It follows 33 miners trapped more than half a mile underground and the extraordinary 69-day effort to bring every one of them home alive.Show More

The series combines unseen archive material with interviews from survivors and rescuers, moving beyond familiar rescue images to explore what happened underground and at the surface. Its three episodes follow the disaster from the desperate opening search to the discovery of the miners and the final extraction.
“Buried Alive” focuses on the terrifying first days, when the men underground have no clear escape and rescuers struggle to determine whether anyone survived. An extraordinary discovery transforms a desperate search into a rescue mission.
“No Way Out” follows the breakthrough in communication and the arrival of food, water and other supplies. Hope returns, but drilling problems and mechanical failures demonstrate how fragile the rescue remains.
“Rescue” moves into the second month underground as engineers and rescuers work toward the seemingly impossible task of bringing all 33 men through a narrow borehole in a specially designed capsule.
The series highlights leadership, endurance, engineering judgment, improvisation and courage. Luis Urzúa represents the ability to create order and responsibility underground. Mario Sepúlveda reflects resilience, emotional energy and determination rooted in family.
André Sougarret represents technical judgment, calculated risk and the responsibility of coordinating a complicated rescue operation. Manuel González represents practical courage and the willingness to personally step forward when the operation reaches its most demanding stage.
This is a personality quiz, not a trivia test. Every answer is valid. The questions place you in situations inspired by the San José Mine collapse, the 69-day wait, the drilling failures, the pressure on the rescue teams and the final journey to the surface.
Choose the response that feels most like your natural instinct. Your choices will reveal whether you most closely match Luis Urzúa, Mario Sepúlveda, André Sougarret or Manuel González.

A drilling plan looks promising, but new information shows that the method could fail. How do you react?

A rescue drill suffers a serious mechanical setback just when success seems closer. What guides your response?
