She participated in college basketball with the Baylor Lady Bears in Texas. In terms of points and shot blocks, she holds the NCAA record of 2,000 points and 500 blocks. Griner grabbed international attention when she was detained in Russia in 2022 for a drug offence. She was later found guilty and sentenced to nine years in jail.
